Description: Personal papers of John. A. Jarvis who was a faculty member at Stout for 27 years until his retirement in 1973. Dr. Jarvis began his professional career as a junior high school industrial arts and mathematics teacher in Flint, Michigan. He also taught mathematics and pattern making at the Flint Technical High School. During World War II he was a supervisor of instruction in the Tank Department of the Armed Forces School at Fort Knox. Jarvis began his professional career in higher education at Stout where he held the titles of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Dean of the School of Industrial Education, Dean of Instruction, and Acting President of Stout. Jarvis was also president of the American Vocational Association (1963-1964). Jarvis received degrees from Stout (B.S., 1936), Wayne State University (Masters, 1941), and the University of Minnesota (Ph. D., 1953). Dr. Jarvis died October 5, 1984. The collection is divided into general files, course materials, and publications and speeches. Included in the general files is biographical information about Jarvis himself, miscellaneous correspondence (including a lengthy letter from Clyde Bowman), information regarding ROTC at Stout, records of United Way of Dunn County, Inc., American Vocational Association materials particularly relating to the Industrial Arts Division and Automobile Manufacturers Section, an office diary (ca. 1951) indicating Jarvis's job duties from day-to-day, and miscellaneous materials. Two of the more interesting files consist of correspondence involving two books which Jarvis co-authored, Practical Mathematics and Mathematics for Draftsmen. Course materials contain lesson plans, course outlines, and lecture notes used by Jarvis in his classwork both as a student at Stout and the University of Minnesota and as a teacher at Stout. Publications and speeches include copies of professional journal articles written by Jarvis, speeches given by Jarvis, his Ph. D. thesis, and a copy of the book, Practical Mathematics.
